Zoning Board of Appeals

While the zoning process is designed to balance the principles of property rights with the protection of the public interest, it has long been recognized that it is next to impossible to write a set of regulations affecting the development of land that can be universally applied.  With that in mind, the State enacted legislation that provides a means for providing relief from certain requirements of the zoning ordinance through a municipality’s Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA.)

The function of the ZBA is to hear and decide appeals of administrative decisions made in implementing the zoning ordinance and to hear and decide requests for variances from the strict terms of the zoning ordinance.  The ZBA may also be called upon to interpret provisions of the zoning ordinance.

With recent changes to the State’s Zoning Enabling Act,  the Cedar Springs City Council now sits as the City’s Zoning Board of Appeals.  Councilmembers include:  Mayor Robert Truesdale, Mayor Pro Tem Charlie Watson, Ken Benham, Ashley Bremmer, Patricia Troost, Mark Fankhauser and Pam Conley.

The ZBA meets on an as-needed basis.  Please contact City Clerk Linda Branyan 616-696-1330 x 103 regarding the status of all ZBA meetings.
