 Burning Regulations

Residents of the City who wish to have a fire ring in their back yard must first obtain a burn permit from the Fire Department by calling 696-1221.  Please leave your name, address and phone number and a firefighter will return your call.  Firefighters check messages two times per day.  Please read the City’s burning ordinance before lighting any chimnea or fire pit.  Failure to understand the City’s burn ordinance does not preclude issuance of a ticket.

Nelson Township residents wishing to obtain a burn permit need to follow the same protocol.  Please call the fire department non-emergency number 696-1221 and leave your name, address and phone number.   If you do not receive a return phone call within 24 hours, it may be because you do not live within our fire jurisdiction.  Click HERE to view a map of our fire jurisdiction.  We only issue permits for City residents and the portion of Nelson Township that we service for fire protection.

Prior to lighting any fire, please familiarize yourself with burning regulations established by the Michigan DNR.

Operational Audit of the Cedar Springs Fire Department

On April 18, 2009 City Council approved an operational audit of the Cedar Springs Fire Department (CSFD).  This audit was commissioned as a result of a theft of gasoline by a volunteer in the summer of 2008.  The volunteer’s relationship with the Fire Department was severed, but it was the desire of the City Manager and Council to ensure safeguards were in place to prevent a similar occurrance from happening ever again.  The City is pleased with the outcome of the audit and positive tone of the report.  Yes, there are things we can do better and it is the City’s goal to continually improve and offer our citizens the best, most affordable services.  The CSFD is proud to serve the residents of the City and portions of Nelson Township and will do their best to move the department forward by following the audit recommendations.  Please click HERE for a complete copy of the audit.
