Council Member Ronny Merlington

Council Member Ronny Merlington graduated from Sand Lake Public School in 1955. He met his wife Shirley while attending high school. Ronny & Shirley were married on July 11, 1958, preceding his senior year at Michigan State University. Ronny was awarded a BA degree with a major in mathematics and minors in the physical sciences and social sciences in 1959. He taught government all 38 years of his career as well as various levels of mathematics courses. Ronny was an athletic coach on the varsity, junior varsity and freshman levels.

Ronny’s lifelong interest in government began when he was a youngster campaigning for his father as a candidate for State Representative.

He and his wife have spent their entire life together in Cedar Springs. His philosophy that all should take part in public service led him to be elected to the Cedar Springs City Council for seven 4-year terms. Ronny was Mayor Pro-tem for 14 years and also has served as Mayor for three terms. He  is currently a member of the Personnel & Compensation Committee and the DDA Facade Review Committee.

He is a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Squadron #287, Glen Hill Post #287 and was active for many years in the Red Flannel Festival and the Chamber of Commerce. Ronny is still actively engaged in hunting, fishing and gardening. Ronny and Shirley have 2 sons, Dominic and Robert, one grandson and one granddaughter.
