17 Mile Road Construction Update

17 Mile Road between the expressway and West Street will be under construction beginning September 7th. Crews will be working on the sidewalks as well as milling and resurfacing. Their hope is to be finished by the Red Flannel Festival. Please remember that Northland Drive is still under construction as well, so add a little extra time to your commute to navigate the lane closures and construction.

Director of Public Works Position Available

The City of Cedar Springs is accepting resumes for the position of Director of Public Works. The incumbent DPW Director is retiring after 33 years of service to the City. The successful candidate will oversee and coordinate a full range of construction, maintenance and repair activities associated with municipal infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, buildings and grounds, cemetery, recreational sites, water system, sewer system and plant, motor/equipment pool and related functional areas. Salary range is dependent on qualifications. The City of Cedar Springs offers a MERS B-3 retirement plan (15/55) plus an excellent health care package.

Drug Collection/Disposal Box at City Hall

Area law enforcement agencies have combined their efforts to eliminate dangerous drugs from your home. A number of police departments, including the Cedar Springs Police Department, have installed a medication/drug collection box at their locations, so that citizens can place unused medications/drugs into the collection box.

The drug collection and disposal program provides a safe disposal for citizens to anonymously dispose unused prescription medications. This program provides an environmentally safe alternative to disposing medications in a landfill or sewer system which may later negatively affect the environment.

Using the drop off box will help to remove harmful prescriptions from the home thereby preventing drug abuse and the risk of accidental overdose and will prevent unused prescriptions from being disposed of in ways that are harmful to our water systems.

Law enforcement officials will properly dispose of the medications using the Kent County waste incinerator.

Liquids will not be accepted since liquids can not be brought to the waste facility. The program is designed for residential material only. Waste from medical offices and health care agencies will not be accepted through this program.

The drop box is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Cedar Springs City Hall, 66 S. Main St.

2010 Election Information

The Clerk’s office is gearing up for a busy election cycle with the General Election right around the corner. November 2nd is the State General Election where electors will select the the office of Governor, Congressional Representatives, State Senator, County Commissioner and delegates to the County Convention. Two City Council seats will be decided at that election as well.

Lawn Waste Collection

With all of the warm weather recently we want to remind those of you who have lawn clippings of the non-exclusive, preferred waste hauler contract the City has with Duncan Disposal. The agreement phased out the City’s role in collecting lawn waste from residents. That means you are no longer required to use paper bags printed with the City’s logo. Residents now have several options for lawn waste collection:

Continue using paper bags. You must make arrangements with Duncan Disposal (363-4999) for collection. If you are not a Duncan customer, you need to become a Duncan customer or make arrangements with your current carrier for collection.
Sign up for a yard waste cart. You can do this by contacting Duncan Disposal or www.duncandisposalservice.com.

Pool Reminder

With Summer just around the corner, we want to remind pool owners or those considering the installation of pools that the City follows the rules and regulations of the International Property Maintenance Code which equires pools, hot tubs and spas containing more than 24″ of water be completely surrounded by a fence or barrier at least 48″ in height above the finished ground level. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching.

Elmwood Cemetery Rules

Please take note of the following rules for Elmwood Cemetery. The City reserves the right to remove or trim any tree or shrub or unsightly flowers. This also includes removal of items that do not contribute to the beauty and dignity of the Cemetery.

The rules include:

No fence or enclosure of any kind shall be placed on or around any burial unit.

Glass containers, wire pins, shells, stones, tin cans, wooden crosses, balloons, solar lights and statues are prohibited. Digging holes in the sod is also prohibited.

Urns or flower containers shall be placed on the side of the head stone. They should not encroach on other spaces.

There is a limit of two decorations per space, of which one may be a Shepherd’s Hook. Pots may not be larger than 24 inches in diameter.

Any grave decorations left after November 1st will be removed.

Wreaths and sprays are permitted after Thanksgiving for winter decoration. No grave blankets are allowed.

Foundations must be installed by the City Department of Public Works Department.

No permanent plantings of any kind are allowed.

All winter decorations must be removed by March 1st.

2010 Hydrant Flushing Schedule

The DPW will flush water hydrants on the following dates: May 14th, September 10th and October 8th.

To avoid staining laundry, please allow water in the tap to run until it is clear before washing white or light colored clothing.
